Creating Logical Arguments from Academic Reading “FIGHTING FOR IDEAS” (Intensive English Program RMUTT) (Week 3)
From the reading lesson for inference
last week, the learners this week are trying to create logical arguments from
the different inferences given in the business articles during the class
session. Arguments are important in
starting to discuss the inference being created from the main idea. It is but normal in academic testing and
research observation to argue the inferred idea and further test the inferred
knowledge for academic verification.
But
for the third week of the program creating inference from the idea is not
enough to verify the reliability of the given main idea. Indeed, making logical argument is important
in academic reading as well. Arguing in
academic point of view will allow the presented idea and inference to be argued
and change its point of view depending from the convincing presentation of the
argument. Usually, good academic
argument presentation will give the students in university to be persuasive in
their research proposal or business plan presentation in writing from reading
or in presentation from reading. In such manner, the aim of week
3’s lesson in argument is to let students assert themselves in terms of
positive argument or negative argument.
Argument STRUCTURE:
(Introduction, Body, Refutation, &
Conclusion)
A. Introduction- Claim from the inference
given.
B. Body- Evidence for Support.
C. Refutation- opposing views,
COUNTERARGUMENT against the claim
D. Conclusion- New claim and recommend
future action
ACTIVITY:
The presentation for each group for their arguments are both
written with correct grammar and speaking presentation for correct oral
delivery of the argument. Each group
must defend one claim either positive or negative. The academic instructor will give his mark
according to the validity and the firmness of the argument presentation.
