Another exciting text classified as non-fiction is the book
from Daron Acemoglu & James A. Robinson.
Robinson and Acemoglu contributed their academic knowledge in terms of
their expertise in economics and governance.
The holistic view of the authors in terms of the effect of economics and
politics towards civilization differs in terms of the historical background of
nations and empires in the past. Power
and prosperity of nations are not caused by one political or economic
determinant alone but a coercive type of event that may consider perfect timing
and execution of laws and policies in each civilization. In my undergraduate
university text used for international business the first chapter that
Ronkainen and Moffett discussed in their text is the imperatives and the
wholeness of International business with its connectedness with other academic
discipline. One important part in
building civilization specifically the modern international business of today
is education and technology which requires more of the new findings and
observations in terms of the modern research facilities related to philosophy
and other fields of social science academic disciplines. Thus, Acemoglu &
Robinson cited the good example of Egypt in the centuries of history in the
world civilization. Egypt long time ago
during the time of the Pharaohs is considered as the center of civilization and
the riches of world economy.
But during our
present time specifically the time of Hosni Mubarak, Egypt became a struggling
economy of the world that during the time of Mubarak the Egyptian nation
struggled politically that relates later with the economic performance of the
country. Likewise, Bahrain, Libya, Syria, and Yemen suffered the economic and
political obsoleteness that these nations struggled and suffered the people and
civilization in these modern and complicated age of civilization. Many academic authors related to social
science reveals that a nation that fails to enhance and re calibrate their
economic and political setup in accordance to the need of the modern
civilization will surely fail in these times of scientific integrated
society. North Korea, Sierra Leone, and
Zimbabwe are still in the level of poverty not because their nation lacks the
natural resources to be used for the production of the domestic product but the
political machines that these countries are following are not calibrated in
accordance to the present civic politics and economic setup. Just few hours ago North Korea started to
reveal their inner problem of their nation.
Daron Acemoglu
James Robinson
Health care in North Korea translated why poverty and famine is still
existing in their isolated country. Kim cannot depend in their own economy and
political system that by then they started to relate their health care system
in the world standards in terms of world health care system. But at the moment the health care system of
North Korea is an extreme example in terms of the negative effect and the fall
of their nations economy. If we consider
the example of Egypt and North Korea and the writings of Acemoglu &
Robinson we can sum up their failures of nation management and politics
according to the suitableness of their overall nation policies and governance
and the needs of its citizens and the future civilization. The poverty reason in Egypt are not that far
in terms what the North Koreans are suffering and the people in Sierra
Leone. When politics is not stable
infested with the corrupt system of government, nation starts to decay creating
the gap between the citizens and the policies being imposed by the national
politicians. The book further compared
and contrasted the effectiveness of the modern system of governance between
Egypt and United States of America.
Egypt leads the wealth of nations before but they wasn’t able to adjust
the change of society since the golden years of the Pharaohs.
Change in society is inevitable in our human
kind existence. Thus, the academic insights and observations of Acemoglu &
Robinson that most of the struggle nations that are in a level of a 3rd
world country is a nation that suffers in corruption, oppression and bad
education. Mohamed Elbaradei a former
director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, wrote on twitter on January
13, 2011 “Tunisia: repression+ absence if social justice+ denial of channels
for peaceful change= a ticking bomb. Both
Tunisia and Egypt saw their frailness in governance and nation building for the
reason that these nations lack political rights. Another factor that the author of the text
emphasized is the geographical and cultural attributes of the nation. Usually the cultural reaction of the nation
in which we can conclude that fundamental culture of the country is practiced
and acquired through times are subject to the changes of the environmental
factors the nation is situated in the geographical region of the world. Egypt simply don’t know what is needed to
make their country prosperous. During the time of Mubarak, it is very clear
in the narratives of Acemoglu & Robinson that the wealth of Mubarak doesn’t
equate to the economic level and stability of his own citizens. North Korea, Sierra Leone, or Zimbabwe
suffered similar political and governance disaster blatantly revealed in the
world of politics and international governance.
These nations are rich in natural resources
that if you go to these countries you will always envy their natural resources
for business manufacturing and world market consumption. But clearly the misuse of politics and bad
governance allow these nations mentioned above to rapidly decay in civilization
existence. Later in the history of the
world, the Ottoman rule in Egypt was topple down by the Napoleonic regime. Thus, Pinker is right in his notion in terms
of the thesis of violence. Men in general will always find a way in gaining
peace and prosperity. Likewise, in my
later blog article I will give the academic insights of the life and works of
Henry Kissinger in finding world peace.
Every world leader from the past and until today are all finding long
and lasting peace without violence. But
then there are many theorem and philosophies in finding real peace that mankind
tends to miss use the philosophical ideas into real political governance. Thus,
the clear example of Egypt with its contrasting political view of united states
defines the meaning and effect of governance in a given nation. Another good comparison that the authors gave
as an example for governance affecting civilization is the country of Mexico
and the united states. The text further investigated
the founding of the lands of the Spanish in the Americas. The Spanish regime lead by Columbus and other
Spanish conquistadors founded the new world but later in the world civilization
and the effect of mankind leave a footprint of political artifacts that lead to
the present political culture of many nations in the region of the Americas. The Spanish conquistador dominated the south American
countries like Bolivia and Argentina will near United States we have the Mexico
and Cuba that later I will discuss more of the country Cuba to discuss the
biography of Henry Kissinger and the new world order. Niall Ferguson who wrote the book Kissinger
the Idealist, Civilization, and the square and the tower proves that failed
nations are the determinants of what, when, and how a given political order and
pattern of governance is being imposed.
As to the country of Egypt and Mexico these two countries are in poverty
and corrupt government compared to a huge gap political convenience of US. Take for example if you can compare the
health care system of these countries and US we differentiate how people enjoyed
the comfort of American life through the years.
But later I will discuss again the evolution and decay of the American democratic
government from the philosophical views of Noam Chomsky from his book the
global discontent (http://ryansinnovativeideas.blogspot.com/2018/01/oops-i-did-it-again-democracy-is-not.html). Controversies during the time of the English
who came in the Americas covers the story of Captain John Smith who has a rough
relationship with the king of Werowocomoco by the name of Wahunsunacock. Wahunsunacock’s
daughter or commonly known as Pocahontas.
The quest of Gold by Captain John Smith and the Virginia Company also
captured the golden heart of Pocahontas.
The conquest of the Spanish and the English during the time of
Pocahontas reveals that COLONIZATION is inevitable in our world given that
MOBILITY of mankind and the fast commerce across the globe through
international business allows COLONIZATION an inevitable scenario. Take for
example the matters of English language and education is a necessity in our
native lands not covered by the governments of England and America but nations
in Asia, India, and the Africas are all influenced to a certain of academic standard
in England or American way. Modern
COLONIZATION today drives us to the idea that COLONIZATION in a good sense
determine for a country to evolve to a much modern way conforming the world
standards for the good of everyone. Well,
not everything though but what I am saying that globalization and world order
as discussed by Kissinger gives us an idea that COLONIZATION is part of
CIVILIZATION’S EVOLUTION. Civilization
will evolve either we like it or not but it is up for our world leaders and the
general public at large how we adopt as a specie to our ever changing
environment specifically during the rapid change of climate change. IF NATIONS WILL FAIL… Then what is next to
our civilization.
