PACIFIC and the Confused Political Economy: The Fiction of Empires and Powers in the Pacific

Interestingly the pacific is a subject both fiction and nonfiction these days due to the interesting political tension roaming around the pacific rim. Since world war two pacific is already a battle ground and the testing site for nuclear armaments. US tested their nuclear arsenal in the pacific region many times that to argue with the North Koreans in terms of nuclear weapons testing, The US has more environmental obligation issues in terms of the devastating nuclear test they’ve initiated since the discovery of nuclear weapons before world war two. My previous blog articles focused more on the background on how US started to invent and weaponized the nuclear power that by the time when Iran and Russia started to illegally import the technology and the armaments in their soil US on the contrary started to worry and they are out of control in terms of using the nuclear weapons around the world.

During world war two US successfully use their nuclear weapons in their historical attack in Hiroshima and Nagasaki but after world war two Soviet innovated the Nuclear weapons technology that by then Iran and other anti US countries started to proliferate the technology and reach to a diplomatic vacuum during the time of the Cold War. Since everyone in the world are capable of starting a nuclear war, diplomacy reach to a point of time that everyone is scared to conduct a nuclear war that it is given in their scientific predictions that nuclear war can dissolve humanity itself. Until today Pacific is in a political and economic dilemma having the pressure from the international political and economic community that the immediate countries who are in the Pacific are the ones who are affected with the international political pressure.

The novel that I’m reading at the moment entice my mind to the real events in the political and economic challenges in the Pacific. Tom Clancy’s Empires and Powers creates a narrative of the current and future imaginative political and economic events in the Pacific region. Tom Clancy further use the Islands of the Philippines specifically Mindanao and Panabo to creatively give the readers real and concrete imagination of the geographical areas of the inner regions of the Pacific. The story of the novel interestingly opens my mind in the aspect of the unrevealed political scenes in the Pacific region. The story focused on the sunken fleet in the portal of US in Panama from the pacific ocean that the ship stores many revelation of the current and future of the Pacific political and geopolitical challenges. The modern problems of international security and white slavery is the very core concepts of the novel were the trade of illegal products and service along the pacific reaches to the soil of United States. China as the dominant country in the Pacific has the International pressure from the countries like Britain and the United States itself. But the war today is not the same war in world war 1 & 2 were the involvement of the general public of a given country are rationalized as more patriotic. Basing from the novel’s plot, Tom Clancy depicts the illegal activities of both American and Chinese group of people who are illegally doing business in the Pacific.

To my intuation, with the many conflicts that the Pacific is having at this time would you think that China and America are in a covert political negotiation with a purpose of scaring the small countries in the Pacific that in the present political situation ASEAN countries are claiming the territory in some parts of South China Sea. To create such conflict from China and US it will create a political tension in the region that eventually South China Sea is a demilitarize zone that no one wants to visit. In the olden times, people in my province create Ghost stories just to create a myth and scare the people away during night time but actually some thieves are rallying and creating their plans for their evil projects. Would it be that what China and the US are doing right now is to create a political and military dilemma to scare the smaller countries away in the Pacific. Who knows, what are the conjugal projects of both China and US in the Spratlys Island this time that the Philippine government has no knowledge. Just a thought that the Pacific is rich in its natural resources that without knowing Philippines is in a place of Gold Rush but the people are ignorant of their own natural wealth. Could it be that America and China are playing “Good Cop, Bad Cop” diplomacy that the ASEAN countries specifically the Philippines has no ally to depend in terms of the political and diplomatic insecurities? I can still recall the days when the cry of the Philippine katipuneros are still crying for their independence in their own land.

Philippines and other smaller countries in the indo China region have the tendencies to be invaded by China knowing that by theory and fundamental politics and economics invasion either through war or diplomacy bigger countries in terms of land area and government has a bigger chances to win. The historical case of Rome and Greece are the good example of the many wars that gives concrete example of diplomacy within countries and empires. Furthermore, in the novel, Clancy also included the usage of technology in the field of diplomacy and crime related to piracy. Information of the fleet that sunk in pacific comprises many information that will change the world of politics and world security. The ship Orion has all the answers of the many hidden relationships between the countries involved in the Pacific political dilemma. Jack Ryan on the other hand is in a political dilemma and conflict in the White House.

The information being connected to the secret service both US and China gave the conspiracy stories and theories throughout the Pacific more interesting. The modern and future Silk Road will involve every aspect of political conflict and the technological. As Jack Ryan exchanges information with President Zhao of China the sunken Ship Orion gave the notion of the reader that China and US are in a deeper connection in terms of the modern trade of global capitalism and mobility. If you recall the concepts of Adam Smith that mobility and power of the imaginary hand will move the national economy and eventually the global economy, it also depicts in the novel that the modern capitalism has the negative outcome in terms of the diplomacy and business negotiation. Back in the political arena of Jack Ryan in the White House, what is really happening in the Pacific is up to the movement of the politicians in the oval office.

All the political problems in the Pacific since world war 2 are all man made that even until today the conflict of the Spratlys Island in the Philippine territory are also subject to the man made political dilemma originated from the 1^st world countries with interest to the Pacific. The Philippines and other countries involved in the Pacific dispute including the ASEAN countries specifically Vietnam are in a huge protest towards mainland China. But what is going on today is the same political scene during the civil war in Vietnam that during the Nixon era many untold political conspiracies are happening inside the oval office reflecting to the world event in Vietnam at that time. The Vietnam War did not bring any good to the population of the Asian people same with the conflict of the Japanese during world war 2. But the fight of democracy and the gospel of capitalism continues even with the suffering of the people of Asia until today. When religion was replaced by ideology in world politics many are in a “Holy War” of Ideology that the world is divided between Marxism ideology and the Capitalism Ideology originated by Adam Smith. But going back to the novel of Tom Clancy, the modern problem of the world that focuses on the Pacific mobility of business is not about religion and ideology but the world problem in terms of terror and piracy. With China, U.S., and the Philippines and other ASEAN countries who are involved in the political conflict in the Pacific, Do you think governments that are involved knows what is going on in the disputed islands of the Pacific right now? Or the governments involved in the disputed waters are in the dilemma of “demilitarized zone” were no country will attempt to check the disputed islands in the Pacific that in reality crimes and illegal trading of drugs and white slavery are already in the operation going in and out in the US soil passing Port Angeles and Seattle. The Novel of Tom Clancy will open your mind that the war of today is not about country against country or ideology against ideology but with the modern pirates hovering the Pacific and mimicking the governments mobility that will allow their crimes to be camouflaged in the international news and political events.
