The series of world war events since the dawn of the civilization of mankind gave a notion to many social engineers that war is part of the culture of humans. War is an aggressive option for a conflict between nations for example that it reaches an impasse political negotiation solution. Many wars of the world are related to the natural selection and the theory of evolution and survival of our species fundamentally Francis Fukuyama gradually translate the evolution of politics and governance related to diplomatic war and conflict between nations. As belief and culture is part of society’s nation-building war as well is also part of survival in terms of the theory of natural selection. The known author Steve Pinker stresses the idea and knowledge about the natural instinct of humans to be violent.

Furthermore, Pinker sited the academic literature of Richard Dawkins “The Selfish Gene” to show to his reader the inner nature of humans to be invasive and selfish by nature. According to Richard Dawkins that even during birth our eggs are still swimming during mitosis our cells are struggling to survive. Thus, by nature humans are aggressive in invading other spaces and territory. Likewise, if humans are greedy in getting more of what he has is a sign that natural selection does exist. As such, it is in our very DNA that humans are selfish regardless of the norms we try to conform, and we even prevent ourselves to indulge such nature of greediness but the animal nature of us according to Steve Pinker will eventually prevail in any society today translated to the civilization and the modern governance. In my next blogs, I will discuss and relate in my next articles the relevance of Richard Dawkins “The Selfish Gene” with its relatedness in terms of the theoretical concepts of Steve Pinker. But let me first discuss the term Social Engineering. As the two terms are not so common in terms of the many studies before and even today that by browsing the academic articles across the web only a handful of academic articles that will relate to social engineering. By the term alone, social will relate to the natural growth of human society but engineering is more inclined to a more technical and radical change sometimes against the laws of nature. We try to engineer nature according to our wildest imagination by converging arts and literature that will formulate the wildest formulation of a new society setup given that engineering is being applied in the social norm. Other literature of Brendan Simms “Britain’s Europe” will also help in understanding more of the culture of war given the historical emphatic sequence of events during the war in Europe. This concept will relate clearly to the natural selection of evolution and human survival discussed by both Richard Dawkins and Steve Pinker and even the basic concept of humanity written by Yuval Noah Harari in his famous text “Sapiens a Brief History of Humankind”, “Homo Deus A Brief History of Tomorrow”, & the latest “21 Lessons for the 21^st Century. The main text that I’m using to discuss my insights regarding the past and the present wars related to the societies culture is the text written by John W Dower a Professor of MIT, his studies and research that relates to humanities and culture, he comes up to an imaginative notion about the tendencies of human societies to go to war. Relatively we can relate that to the natural selection that other humanities professors that I mentioned above like Harari, Fukuyama, & Pinker. John W. Dower discusses the series of wars in our universe specifically the modern wars of the 20^th and 21^st century and the future of society and the culture of war.

In his text Cultures of War published by W. W. Norton The New Press 2010, the text focus more of the war that started in Pearl Harbor with its parallel war cases in 9-11 and Iraq war. The vivid analysis of Dower gave him the Pulitzer prize in his career as an academic writer and professor. His concerns regarding the culture of war are being discussed in the various subtopics and chapters. The topics like the history of the war and why did it happen. If you can just imagine the war in world war two during the German and the Japanese war in Asia and Europe that too many notions if only that war is being prevented by the top leaders of the leading nations of the world then war damages can be prevented. But the trigger point of war is the most important part of the discussion of Dower in his literature. Why civilization will always resort to war and violence? Is there nothing we can do except to follow our natural behavior as humans defined by Fukuyama, Pinker, Dawkins, & Harari?

Well, we cannot deny that many wars of the world the main reason is wealth and money. So, if we calculate in a simple logic that without money there is no war and without war, there is no actual business?

War in Iraq and 9/11

Thus, we can presume that war is not only part of the culture but also part of the business. We can consider as well, as what Dower also consider the Roman War in the Mediterranean and as they are coming down to Euro Asia wealth is the main “fuel” and cause of their adrenalin for war. Without wealth after the war then their voyage from Europe will be pointless. Another reasonable cause of war is the expansion of land territory. As to the Roman diplomats before if we can’t be allied then we are enemies. That soft and hard approach of invasion is still existing in the present invasion of China towards the Philippines and other neighboring ASEAN countries. Soft and hard approach diplomatic invasion will allow the Romans before and even China today to advance its territorial area in land, sea, and air against the United States in the Pacific Region. The pressure of the naval invasion in the famous seas of the world such as the black sea near Crimea and the Pacific will push to the edge of a diplomatic conflict and war. What is the challenge with the United States is the part on how they can gain the sympathy to trigger the war. The congressional session in the United Nation is a way to a diplomatic campaign to start a war.

Just like the war in Iraq, without the signature of the member countries and the concrete legal evidence that the crime of humanity is being committed by a given country or a leader of the country like Saddam Hussein and his country Iraq the allied countries together with its allied forces cannot enforce the sanction in terms of economic and medical aid to the country. Just like Iraq and North Korea, these economic sanctions will always deprive the given countries to advance a war. In the case of China at the moment, the “trade War” between US and China are still in a push and pull situation that at the moment the G20 summit will reveal as to how the two leading economic countries will resolve the trade war challenges of the century. As what Dower says in his text that wealth and gold are one of the reasons for war. As such, the issues that redundantly occurring in the case of the modern wars like Iraq is the “crime for humanity”.

The culture of War From Then and Now

But another issue that considers in his writings is the nation-building after the war. The term SOCIAL ENGINEERING is the most important part that the Americans fail to implement during the time of the Iraq war. Social engineering is not new if you are researching about humanities and arts. The architectural design applied to the social engineering process is the vital engineering during and after the war. Psychological stability of the civilians is also considered after the war that if we consider the Iraq war and even during the war in Pearl Harbor many people had suffered the mental illness in terms of the traumatic causes of war. Thus, social engineering will apply to all the mobility of the country given that the country is in its rebuilding stage. The failure of war is when the nation who attack is only good in the planning of destroying the opposing country, but the nation-building is not part of the process. Thus, Dower suggests that social engineering is a vital part of a given country invasion. Moreover, in the case of the Iraq war, the after effect of the war in Iraq gave birth to the radical terrorist that the ripple negative effect echoes to the traumatic event in the 9/11 attack in New York. If a given war operation is not well managed according to the rebuilding of the nation and the overall social engineering, then in the future the civilization will give birth to a new war. Lastly, the most important part that Dower discussed in his book that is subject to a complex aspect in nation-building is the communication both in the military and the political aspect related to the nation building. During world war two communication of the US and the opposing Germans will give the errors of war and the advantage of war when the exchange of intelligence both the US and the allied forces with the opposing Germans complicate the war and the after effect of the war and the nation building. In a parallel view, in the late cold war intelligence is a big issue of winning the war. As the allied forces and the opposing countries advances in technologies intelligence are becoming a big issue. Even today in the TRADE WAR of U.S. and China, intelligence is a vital role in winning the diplomatic war. As such, in most countries that allied the U.S. are warned to use the Huawei smartphones to prevent from spying. Thus, Telecommunication companies of China are spreading like wildfire outside the international market specifically near the borders of China like the Philippines to install in a diplomatic way the new communication technology to gather information both vital and general information for business and defense. As Dower widens his narratives regarding the necessity of war in our society Pinker, Harari, Dawkins, Fukuyama, Simms also supported the concept of Dower in terms of the natural behavior of humans for war and violence. As such how can Henry Kissinger fulfill his dreams of a “World Order”. Are we going to a dystopia or utopia?
